Turtles of Black Sand Beach

In December 2014 we found out from our neighbors that there would be turtles hatching on their friend's beach house at Black Sand Beach, Big Island.

There was a Hawksbill Turtle nest that was going to be uncovered by volunteers from the University of Hawaii, Hilo.  These turtles are rare with only a few nesting sites.

There was a crowd of people watching them uncover the nest, brushing away the sand a few grains at a time.  Finally the heads started poking through the sand.  These were gathered up and released to the ocean.

The lucky few may return in 15 years or more to lay their own nest...

I put a video on You Tube if you would like to see more.
